Artist Statement

I remember looking out the window in the backseat of our family car on a particularly clear Wisconsin night and being awestruck by the stars. I had recently learnt that each one of those stars was a Sun like ours. I was terrified, never felt so small, and at the same time was on fire with imagination.

Awe is something I am constantly in search of. I have encountered it only in Nature and through the medium of art. I will never forget those stars, experiencing the roar of laughter from the audience in a theater, or seeing the depth of life and color in the thermal pools of Yellowstone.

Pottery is a beautiful marriage of nature and art. I am in awe of how we can take raw materials and bring them to life. It’s remarkable that a pot, a static object, can contain so much movement.

If a piece can stir emotion, nostalgia, memory and/or joy, to me, it is work that sings. This is the kind of work I strive to make, the kind of work that inspires awe.
